Ms. Dubravka Maljevic is an accomplished graduate engineer in medical technology and holds a prestigious MBA in Health Business Administration from the renowned Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg.
With her extensive background, she initially built her career in product development for telecommunications before transitioning to the highly specialized field of medical technology in hospitals. Throughout her career, Ms. Maljevic has held key positions, starting as a hospital engineer and ultimately rising to become the deputy head of the medical technology department at the well-respected Asklepios Kliniken. Since May 2018, she has been at the forefront of innovation as the head of the medical technology department at BG Kliniken – the largest hospital network in Germany, part of the statutory accident insurance system. In this role, she leads transformative advancements and is dedicated to shaping the future of medical technology. Her exceptional expertise is focused on the development and implementation of cutting-edge solutions, positioning her as a true pioneer in the field.
🔶How did your professional journey begin? Did you know what it meant to be an engineer since you were a child?
Honestly, as a kid, I had no idea what being an engineer really meant! But I was always fascinated by taking things apart and figuring out how they worked. It wasn’t until I got to school and started diving into technology and science that everything clicked for me. That’s when I realized that engineering was the perfect path for my interests. It was definitely a gradual process before I found my direction.
🔶Over the years, how have your ambitions evolved? Have your project ideas expanded, stalled, or are you satisfied with what you do today?
Wow, so much has changed! In the beginning, I was really focused on smaller technical challenges. Now, I think much bigger and longer-term—especially about how my work can positively impact society. Of course, there are times when projects hit a snag; that’s just part of the journey. But overall, I’m very happy with what I do. In the field of biomedical engineering, I truly feel like I’m making a difference.
🔶How did you realize that the biomedical field sparked a passion in you like no other type of work could?
That was a real eye-opening moment for me! When I first saw how technology could improve someone’s life—it was incredibly moving. The direct connection between my work and enhancing someone’s quality of life made me realize that this is where I belong. The biomedical field uniquely combines technology and medicine, and that combination fascinates me.
🔶How important is it for you to pass on a love for science to your daughters while also contributing to making the world a better place?
This is something I care deeply about! I want to instill in my daughters a love for science and an innate curiosity about the world. Science isn’t just a career; it’s a way of thinking that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. At the same time, I want them to see that everyone has the power to make a positive impact through knowledge and dedication. It’s about taking responsibility and leaving the world in better shape for the next generation.
🔶Where should we focus more to enhance our activities?
I believe we should put more emphasis on inspiring young people to get excited about biomedical engineering from an early age—perhaps through hands-on workshops or engaging projects. Additionally, creating more platforms for interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers and clinicians would be beneficial since innovation often happens at the intersection of different fields. We should also work on increasing the visibility of our successes to raise broader awareness about the importance of our work!
