Our second International Interview: Fabiola Martinez!

Discovering: Fabiola and her story! The Professor and Researcher in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana

Let’s discover our second international biomedical story together!

Short introduction of the professionist.

I am working in the biomedical engineering field for 30 years, mostly in teaching and researching.

After finishing the undergraduate program, I worked as biomedical technician and clinical engineer in two major hospitals in Mexico City, a General Hospital and a National Institute of Health. I decided to continue studying and came back to the university for an Engineering Master degree remaining there as a professor after finishing the courses. With the participation in lots of scientific events and the direction of many student projects, I detected an opportunity to work in a complementary field and began the PhD studios in which I am developing my research.

What’s your current job?

I am a professor and researcher in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Member of the National Laboratory on Research in Medical Imaging and Instrumentation and the Optimization and Artificial Intelligence research area. Also, I am the IFMBE Clinical Engineering Division Chair

What are the characteristics and peculiarities that a/an biomedic professionist should have today and for the future in order to collaborate more and more directly with biomedical realities including our/your NHS (national health system)?

The biomedical professionist must be resilient, must have a high degree of adaptation to the changes on the situations, must have an adequate degree of understanding the position of the other sides, a sense of connection with the immediate environment (place of work, coworkers, allies), and be aware of the impact that the FBME functions have healthcare.

From what starting points did you depart* to arrive at the activity you are is currently dealing with?

The key points are:

🔶My work at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery where I realized the importance of being more prepared to deal with the technical and technological health issues

🔶My project on Auditory Evoked Potential for the MSc Degree that allowed me to work with the top of the wave in digital signal processing

🔶My courses related in Clinical Engineering that showed me the possibilities on making a difference from the classroom

Fabiola and her story! The Professor and Researcher in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana. Continued here…

Biomedical job sector is complex for different causes: the kind of required profile, that are most of all unknown, job opportunities. Given these peculiarities, many professionals, especially recent graduates, are led to look for opportunities in different engineering fields such as Automotive, IT, etc., effectively driving away potential aspirations. What changes would you like in order to improve the presence and developments of such an important and skilled healthcare profession in your country?

I can talk about Latin America and Mexico in particular.

I think that one important change has to be the recognition of biomedical engineers in healthcare as health professionals and that they have to be part of the strategic teams for facing the micro and macro challenges in health.

A more clarity for the directors on what means to have the clinical engineering support at different levels, not only at the technical one, that let them have more opportunities to be active part of the process regarding planning and evaluating the technological performance

A technical pill for those learning about his profession for the first time from this interview.

Biomedical Engineering is itself a whole word of opportunities, look for your place in this world and be the best possible version.
